Introduction to Relief Printmaking

with Edward Steffanni

Relief is the oldest printmaking technique in the world, with its origins dating back to at least 200 CE in China. While materials and tools have evolved, the general technique of carving away negative space to create a raised image has remained the same. Students will learn to work in basic techniques of linoleum carving and collagraph constructed blocks. Once the carving or construction of the block is complete, students will learn how to effectively ink up and print their block on paper by hand printing and using an etching press.
