Beginning Glass Bead Making (three sessions)

Mondays March 2,  9  and 16th. 6-9 pm

Ages: 16 and up

This is a three session class. Make your own glass beads. Basic bead making using a surface mix torch and soda-lime glass rods will be the focus of the class including larger plain beads and creating various bead shapes. Basic design techniques for decorating beads including frit, dots and stringer will be explored. Torch and studio safety will be reviewed. The class will be taught as an open studio that explores topics and techniques based upon the students’ interests with the guidance of the instructor as needed.IMPORTANT: Students taking glass courses must wear natural fiber clothing (i.e., cotton shirt and denim jeans), closed toe shoes and hair tied back and out of the way. Loose clothing that will be in the way of the torch is strongly discouraged.

In two, two hour sessions learn both the basics of wheel throwing by forming at least one bowl and then glazing it. The second class you will learn about the mysteries of glaze and firing, where art, chemistry and physics intersect. You will chose the glazes of your choice for your fully functional, food, dishwasher and microwave safe bowls. Through out experienced instructors will provide the support and advice you need to be successful. Clay, tools, and glaze firing all provided. Your bowls will ready for pickup at a later date to show off your new artistic skills to all.

Begin by casting your own plaster blank, then create a design—or choose one provided—to bring to life in low relief. Using plaster, a forgiving and responsive medium, you’ll explore how light interacts with form. Learn to use light and shadow to give even shallow carvings a sense of depth and dimension.
